The work:
Paul Kirby is something of a mystery.

But that veil is lifted once you spend time in his workshop. Located in a nondescript warehouse in Loveland, Colorado, there's an incredible convergence of art, science, and technology. Paul Kirby has led a storied career in software that began with an engineering degree at UC-Berkeley and led to working at Hewlett Packard and eventually settling in venture capital in Boulder, bolstered with an MBA from Harvard. But, his true love was mastering various disciplines, including mechanical engineering, machine shop skills, programming, pneumatics, and structural dynamics, to create his robot, Dulcinea, that he trained to paint masterworks that took years to complete. A true modern-day DaVinci, Kirby wanted to work with our team to come up with the strategy, vision, and branding that could not only bring credibility to his foundation's website but also create a short documentary about his life, process, and convergence of creativity, innovation, and spontaneity. Notably, I helped create much of the positioning for the messaging that blended his unique story, process, and life's passionate work to form a visual and editorial narrative that spanned his foundation's site and the documentary film where I was the story editor.

Outcome
:
Paul's outdated website got a complete reimagining, bringing an enjoyable editorial hook and completely new visual design based on his work and robotic creation, as well as a short documentary film that brought the story to life and premiered in film festivals, including the Vail Film Festival (2021) where it was a Best Short Film Nominee, and the Portland Film Festival (2021).
